A facing (also called a veneer) is a thin layer of ceramic or composite that is placed over or on the teeth to restore both the function and aesthetics of the teeth. Facings can be made in different ways and with different materials. In general, there are two types of facings: ceramic facings and composite facings.
A composite facing is often applied directly in the patient's mouth, while ceramic facings are made in a laboratory by specialized dental technicians on a model. This approach ensures an optimal fit and aesthetic finish, depending on the skills of the ceramist. Ceramic facings are particularly durable because they wear very little and are less prone to staining.
Facings are often used on teeth that are broken, too short or too long, crooked, have an irregular surface, or are discolored. They can also be an alternative to braces. The advantage of facings is that less tooth tissue needs to be ground down compared to placing crowns. Sometimes it is even possible to place facings without removing any tooth tissue, resulting in a natural aesthetic outcome without the additional costs and disadvantages of braces. This depends on the insights and skills of both the dentist and the dental technician.
In cases where teeth are severely damaged or contain large fillings, leaving too little natural tooth structure, it is not possible to place facings. In such cases, crowns are a better solution.
Our EDT facings can have a very long lifespan, up to 15 years or longer, with regular check-ups and good oral care. All our facings are handmade, ensuring the highest aesthetic quality and precision.
